Baruch atah ADONAI Eloheinu melech ha-olam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav, v'tzivanu l'hadlik neir shel shabat.

Blessed are You, ADONAI, our God, King of the universe, Who sanctified us with His commandments, and has commanded us to kindle the light of the Shabbat.

Introduction to Kabbalat Shabbat

Unlike the daily services which go back over 1500 years, Kabbalat Shabbat ("welcoming the Shabbat") was introduced into the liturgy by the 16th-century mystics of Safed (Tz'fat) in Israel, who would go into the fields on Friday afternoon to welcome the Shabbat bride, singing the new hymn L'Chah Dodi. One aspect of making Shabbat a time of m'nuchah, of true peace and rest, is to let go of the cares of the week. There is a practice of reviewing one day of the preceding week before reciting each of the six psalms; as we recite each psalm we focus on letting go of the concerns that arose on that day. (We can associate Sunday with Psalm 95, then Monday with Psalm 96, etc., ending with Friday and Psalm 29, or we can proceed in the opposite order.) This practice may be carried out either individually or communally.

Come! – let us sing to ADONAI, let us call out to the Rock of our salvation. Let us greet Him with thanksgiving, with praiseful songs let us call out to Him. For a great God is ADONAI, and a great King above all heavenly powers. For in His power are the hidden mysteries of earth, and the mountain summits are His. For His is the sea and He perfected it, and the dry land — His hands fashioned it. Come! — let us prostrate ourselves and bow, let us kneel before God, our Maker. For He is our God and we can be the flock He pastures, and the sheep in His charge — even today, if we but heed His call! Do not harden your heart as at Meribah, as on the day of Massah in the Wilderness; when Your ancestors tried Me; they tested Me, though they had seen My deed.
Chazzan – For forty years I was angry with the generation; then I said, 'An errant-hearted people are they, and they know not My ways. Therefore, I have sworn in My wrath that they shall not enter My land of contentment'

He will judge the peoples with fairness.’
Chazzan –The heavens will be glad and the earth will rejoice, the sea and its fullness will roar; the field and everything in it will exult, then all the trees of the forest will sing with joy — before ADONAI, for He will have arrived, He will have arrived to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and peoples with His truth.

When ADONAI will reign, the world will rejoice; numerous islands will be glad. Cloud and dense darkness will surround Him; righteousness and justice are His throne's foundation. Fire will advance before Him and consume His enemies all around. His lightning bolts will light up the world, the inhabitants of the earth will see and tremble. Mountains will melt like wax before ADONAI, before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens will declare His righteousness, and all the peoples will see His glory. Humiliated will be all who worship idols, who pride themselves in worthless gods; to Him all the powers will bow. Zion will hear and be glad, and the daughters of Judah will exult, because of Your judgments, ADONAI. For You, ADONAI, are supreme above all the earth; exceedingly exalted above all powers,
Chazzan –O lovers of ADONAI — despise evil! He guards the lives of His devout ones, from the hand of the wicked He rescues them. Light is sown for the righteous; and for the upright of heart, gladness. Be glad, O righteous, in ADONAI, and give grateful praise at the mention of His Holy Name.

Call out to ADONAI, all inhabitants of the earth open your mouths in joyous songs and play music. Play music to ADONAI on a harp, with harp and sound of chanted praise. With trumpets and shofar sound, call out before the King, ADONAI. The sea and its fullness will roar, the world and those who dwell therein.

When ADONAI will reign nations will tremble. Before Him Who is enthroned on Cherubim, the earth will quake. Before ADONAI Who is great in Zion and Who is exalted above all nations. They will gratefully praise Your great and awesome Name; it is holy! Mighty is the King, Who loves justice. You founded fairness. The justice and righteousness of Jacob, You have made. Exalt ADONAI, our God, and bow at His footstool; He is holy! Moses and Aaron were among His priests, and Samuel among those who invoke His Name — they called upon ADONAI and He answered them,
Chazzan – In a pillar of cloud He spoke to them; they obeyed His testimonies and whatever decree He gave them. ADONAI, our God, You answered them A forgiving God were You to them — and an Avenger for their iniquities. Exalt ADONAI, our God, and bow at His holy mountain; for holy is ADONAI, our God.

It is customary to stand during the recitation of the following psalm, and to recite it slowly, fervently and aloud. Some continue standing until after the mourner’s kaddish.

A psalm of David. Render unto ADONAI, you sons of the powerful; render unto ADONAI, honor and might Render unto ADONAI honor worthy of His Name; prostrate yourselves before ADONAI in His intensely holy place. The voice of ADONAI is upon the waters, the God of Glory thunders, ADONAI is upon vast waters. The voice of ADONAI is in power! The voice of ADONAI is in majesty! The voice of ADONAI breaks the cedars ADONAI shatters the cedars of Lebanon! He makes them prance about like a calf; Lebanon and Siryon like young re'eimim. The voice of ADONAI cleaves with shafts of fire. The voice of ADONAI convulses the wilderness; ADONAI convulses the wilderness of Kadesh.
Chazzan – The voice of ADONAI frightens the hinds, and strips the forests bare; while in His Temple all proclaim, 'Glory!' ADONAI sat enthroned at the Deluge; ADONAI sits enthroned as King forever. ADONAI will give might to His people, ADONAI will bless His people with peace.

This meditation may be read aloud by the leader after Psalm 29, and may be followed by the chanting of L'chah Dodi.

Meditation - Letting go of the week

We pause for a few moments …
to let go of the week that has passed …

Breathing in... and breathing out...

Like every other week, it has been
a week of striving …
we each had an agenda of what
we wanted to do …
we each had great hopes for the week …
but we didn't accomplish all our objectives.

Although much remains undone,
on Shabbat we pause

Breathing in... and breathing out...

As Shabbat approaches …
imagine your agenda drifting to the back of your mind let all your strivings float away for a day …

Breathing in ...
take in the fresh air of Shabbat …
Breathing out ...
let go of your strivings … Breathing in... and breathing out...

Like every other week,
it has been a week of struggle …
at times it seemed that
everything was going wrong …
at times it seemed that
we went from crisis to crisis …
Although much is yet unsettled,
on Shabbat we pause

Breathing in ... and breathing out...

As Shabbat approaches …
feel your concerns
drift to the back of your mind,
let your struggles float away for a day …
Breathing in ...
take in the fresh air of Shabbat …
Breathing out ...
let go of your struggles …

Breathing in... and breathing out...

We let go of the week ...
as we welcome Shabbat …
We let go of the week ...
as we welcome Shabbat.

Mark 2:27-28

9

And he said to them, “Shabbat was given for the sake of man, and not man for the sake of Shabbat.” Therefore, the son of man is master even of the Shabbat.

Rightward and leftward, you shall spread out mightily, And you shall extol the might of ADONAI, Through the man descended from Peretz, Then we shall he glad and mirthful. Rise and face the rear of the synagogue to greet the Sabbath Bride. When saying the words ‘Enter, O bride’ bow and turn, as if to acknowledge the entrance of the Sabbath.

Rise and face the rear of the synagogue to greet the Sabbath Bride. When saying the words ‘Enter, O bride’ bow and turn, as if to acknowledge the entrance of the Sabbath.

20

Enter in peace O crown of her husband, Even in gladness and good cheer, Among the faithful of the treasured nation Enter, O bride! Enter, O bride!

With the recitation of Psalm 92, we accept upon ourselves the holiness of the Sabbath.

The following kavvanah maybe recited here.

During daytime, when we can see light, it is easy to recognize God's presence and God's blessings. When the light disappears, however, we can only remind ourselves that God's presence is still with us and that God's blessings are still available to us, even though the evidence of God's presence is gone. In the morning, Your loving kindness, Your chesed, is apparent, but at night we rely on Your emunah, Your faithfulness. "Day" and "night" are understood here both literally and figuratively. If we store up our evidence of God's presence at life's brighter moments, we can use it to remind ourselves of God's continuing presence when we find ourselves in the dark.

Psalm 92 - For Shabbat

21

Mizmor shir l'yom haShabat: Tov l'hodot laADONAI, ulzameir l'shimcha elyon. L'hagid baboker chasdecha, veemunat'cha baleilot. Alei asor vaalei navel, alei higayon b'chinor. Ki simachtani ADONAI b'fawalecha, b'maasei yadecha aranein.

A psalm, a song for the Sabbath day, It is good to thank ADONAI and to sing praise to Your Name, O Exalted One; to relate Your kindness in the dawn and Your faith in the nights. Upon ten-stringed instrument and lyre, with singing accompanied by a harp. For You have gladdened me, ADONAI, with Your deeds; at the works of Your Hands I sing glad song.

22

How great are Your deeds, ADONAI; exceedingly profound are Your thoughts.

23

A boor cannot know, nor can a fool understand this: when the wicked bloom like grass and all the doers of iniquity blossom - it is to destroy them till eternity. But You remain exalted forever, ADONAI. For behold! - Your enemies, ADONAI, for behold! - Your enemies shall perish, dispersed shall be all doers of iniquity. As exalted as a re'eim's shall be my pride, I will be saturated with ever-fresh oil. My eyes have seen my vigilant foes; when those who would harm me rise up against me, my ears have heard their doom.

Chazzan:

24

A righteous man will flourish like a date palm, like a cedar in the Lebanon he will grow tall. Planted in the house of ADONAI, in the courtyards of our God they will flourish. They will still be fruitful in old age, vigorous and fresh they will be - to declare that ADONAI is just, my Rock in Whom there is no wrong.

Psalm 93

Eidotecha ne-emnu m'od l'veitcha na-avah kodesh, ADONAI l'orech yamim.

ADONAI will have reigned, He will have donned grandeur; ADONAI will have donned might and girded himself; even firmed the world that it should not falter. Your throne was established from of old; eternal are You. Like rivers they raised, O ADONAI, like rivers they raised their voice; like rivers they shall raise their destructiveness.
Chazzan – More than the roars of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea — You are mighty on high, ADONAI. Your testimonies about Your House, the Sacred Dwelling are exceedingly trustworthy — O ADONAI, may it be for lengthy days.

Matthew 11:28-30

26

Turn to me, all who labor and are burdened, and I will cause you to rest. Accept upon yourself my yoke and learn from me, for I am humble and lowly in spirit, and you will find a resting place for your souls. For my yoke is pleasant and my burden is light.

Blessings of the Shema

Blessed are You, ADONAI, our God, King of the universe, Who by His word brings on evenings, with wisdom opens gates, with understanding alters periods, changes the seasons, and orders the stars in their heavenly constellations as He wills. He creates day and night, removing light before darkness and darkness before light. He causes day to pass and brings night, and separates between day and night — ADONAI, Master of Legions, is His Name.
Chazzan – May the living and enduring God continuously reign over us, for all eternity. Blessed are You, ADONAI, Who brings on evenings. (Cong.—Amen.)

Chazzan – For they are our life and the length of our days and about them we will meditate day and night. May You not remove Your love from us forever. Blessed are You, ADONAI, Who loves His nation Israel. (Cong.—Amen.).

Deut. 6:4

V'ahavta eit ADONAI Elohecha, B'kol l'vav'cha, uv'kol nafsh'cha, uv'kol m'odecha. V'hayu had'varim haeileh, asher anochi m'tsav'cha hayom, al l'vavecha. V'shinantam l'vanecha, v'dibarta bam b'shivt'cha b'veitecha, uv’lecht'cha vaderech, uv'shavchb'cha uvkumecha. Ukshartam l'ot al yadecha, v'hayu l'totafot bein einecha. Uchtavtam, al m'zuzot beitecha, uvisharecha.

You shall love ADONAI, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your resources. Let these matters that I command you today be upon your heart. Teach them thoroughly to your children and speak of them while you sit in your home, while you walk on the way, when you retire and when you arise. Bind them as a sign upon your arm and let them be tefillin between your eyes, and write them on the doorposts of your house and upon your gates.

While reciting the second paragraph (Deuteronomy 11:13-21), concentrate on accepting all the commandments and the concept of reward and punishment.

32

Deuteronomy 11:13-21

And it will come to pass that if you continually hearken to My commandments that I command you today, to love, ADONAI your God, and to serve Him, with all your heart and with all your Soul - then I will provide rain for your land in its proper time, the early and late rains, that you may gather in your grain, your wine, and your oil. I will provide grass in your field for your cattle and you will eat and be satisfied. Beware lest your heart be seduced and you turn astray and serve gods of others and bow to them. Then the wrath of ADONAI will blaze against you. He will restrain the heaven so there will be no rain and the ground will not yield its produce. And you will swiftly be banished from the goodly land which ADONAI gives you. Place these words of Mine upon your heart and upon your soul; bind them for a sign upon your arm and let them be tefillin between your eyes, Teach them to your children, to discuss them, while you sit in your home, while you walk on the way, when you retire and when you arise. And write them on the doorposts of your house and upon your gates. In order to prolong your days and the days of your children upon the ground that ADONAI has sworn to your ancestors to give them, like the days of the heaven on the earth.

Meditation - Listen to My Commandments

This interpretive translation of the second paragraph of the Sh'ma reflects the perspective described above:

33

If you listen to My commandments and do them, the rain that falls on your fields will also fall in your lives, enabling everything to grow. Your fields will be fruitful, your animals will be fruitful, and you will be fruitful in body and in spirit. But if you turn away from My commandments, then you will also turn away from My rain; you will no longer be aware of this blessing and its source, so that, for you, the rain will no longer exist. You will be unable to enjoy fully the fruit of your fields, or the fruit of your lives. So listen to My commandments, be mindful of My blessings, and inherit the promises I made to your ancestors: of fields rich with My bounty, of lives rich with My presence.

Numbers 15:37-41:

And ADONAI said to Moses saying: Speak to the Children of Israel and say to them that they are to make themselves tzitzit on the corners of their garments, throughout their generations. And they are to place upon the tzitzit of each corner a thread of techeilet. And it shall constitute tzitzit for you, that you may see it and remember all the commandments of ADONAI and perform them; and not explore after your heart and after your eyes after which you stray. So that you may remember and perform all My commandments; and be holy to your God. I am ADONAI, your God, Who has removed you from the land of Egypt to be a God to you. I am ADONAI your God - it is true. ADONAI, Eloheikem, Emet.

35

ADONAI, Eloheikem, Emet.

ADONAI, your God, Is true...

…And faithful is all this, and it is firmly established for us that He is ADONAI our God, and there is none but Him, and we are Israel, His nation. He redeems us from the power of kings, our King Who delivers us from the hand of all the cruel tyrants. He is the God Who exacts vengeance for us from our foes and Who brings just retribution upon all enemies of our soul; Who performs great deeds that are beyond comprehension, and wonders beyond number. Who set our soul in life and did not allow our foot to falter, Who led us upon the heights of our enemies and raised our pride above all who hate us; Who wrought for us miracles and vengeance upon Pharaoh; signs and wonders on the land of the offspring of Ham; Who struck with His anger all the firstborn of Egypt and removed His nation Israel from their midst to eternal freedom; Who brought His children through the split parts of the Sea of Reeds while those who pursued them and hated them He caused to sink into the depths. When His children perceived His power, they lauded and gave grateful praise to His Name,
Chazzan – And His Kingship they accepted upon themselves willingly. Moses and the Children of Israel raised their voices to You in song with abundant gladness — and said unanimously;

36

Who is like You among the heavenly powers, ADONAI! Who is like You, mighty in holiness, too awesome for praise, doing wonders!
Chazzan – Your children beheld Your majesty, as You split the sea before Moses: 'This is my God!' they exclaimed, then they said:

37

'ADONAI shall reign for all eternity!'

38

Chazzan – And it is further said: 'For ADONAI has redeemed Jacob and delivered him from a power mightier than he.' Blessed are You ADONAI, Who redeemed Israel. (Cong— Amen.)

Set us aright with good counsel from before Your Presence, and save us for Your Name's sake. Shield us, remove from us foe, plague, sword, famine, and woe; remove spiritual impediment from before us and behind us and in the shadow of Your wings shelter us - for God Who protects and rescues us are You; for God, the Gracious and Compassionate King, are You.
Chazzan – Safeguard our going and coming — for life and for peace from now to eternity. And spread over us the shelter of Your peace. Blessed are You, ADONAI, Who spreads the shelter of peace upon us, upon all of his people Israel and upon Jerusalem. (Cong.—Amen.)

Elohai N'tzor (Meditation after the Amidah)

My God, guard my tongue from evil and my lips from speaking deceitfully. To those who curse me, let my soul be Silent; and let my soul be like dust to everyone. Open my heart to Your Torah, then my soul will pursue Your commandments. As for all those who design evil against me, speedily nullify their counsel and disrupt their design. Act for Your Name's sake; act for Your right hand's sake; act for Your sanctity's sake; act for Your Torah's sake. That Your beloved ones may be given rest; let Your right hand save, and respond to me.

May the expressions of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart find favor before You, ADONAI, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Bow and take three steps back. Bow left and say, 'He Who makes peace ...’ bow right and say, 'may He make peace ...’ bow forward and say, 'and upon ... Amen.'

59

May it be Your will, ADONAI our God and the God of our forefathers, that the Holy Temple be rebuilt, speedily in our days. Grant us our share in Your Torah, and may we serve You there with reverence, as in days of old and in former years. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to ADONAI, as in days of old and in former years.

It is our duty to praise the Master of all, to ascribe greatness to the Molder of primeval creation, for He has not made us like the nations of the lands and has not emplaced us like the families of the earth; for He has not assigned our portion like theirs nor our lot like all their multitudes. But we bend our knees, bow, and acknowledge our thanks before the King Who reigns over kings, the Holy One, Blessed is He. He stretches out heaven and establishes earth's foundation, the seat of His homage is in the heavens above and His powerful Presence is in the loftiest heights. He is our God and there is none other. True is our King, there is nothing beside Him, as it is written in His Torah: ‘You are to know this day and take to your heart that ADONAI is the only God - in heaven above and on the earth below - there is none other.

Therefore we put our hope in You, ADONAI our God, that we may soon see Your mighty splendor, to remove detestable idolatry from the earth, and false gods will be utterly cut off, to perfect the universe through the Almighty's sovereignty. Then all humanity will call upon Your Name, to turn all the earth's wicked toward You. All the world's inhabitants will recognize and know that to You every knee should bend, every tongue should swear. Before You, ADONAI, our God, they will bend every knee and cast themselves down and to the glory of Your Name they will render homage, and they will all accept upon themselves the yoke of Your kingship that You may reign over them soon and eternally. For the kingdom is Yours and You will reign for all eternity in glory as it is written in Your Torah: ADONAI shall reign for all eternity.
Chazzan – And it is said: ADONAI will be King over all the world - on that day ADONAI will be One and His Name will be One.

An accomplished woman, who can find? — Far beyond pearls is her value. Her husband's heart relies on her and he shall lack no fortune. She repays his good, but never his harm, all the days of her life. She seeks out wool and linen, and her hands work willingly. She is like a merchant's ships, from afar she brings her sustenance. She arises while it is yet nighttime, and gives food to her household and a ration to her maidens. She envisions a field and buys it, from the fruit of her handiwork she plants a vineyard. With strength she girds her loins, and invigorates her arms. She discerns that her enterprise is good —so her lamp is not snuffed out by night. Her hands she stretches out to the distaff, and her palms support the spindle. She spreads out her palm to the poor, and extends her hands to the destitute. She fears not snow for her household, for her entire household is clothed with scarlet wool. Luxurious bedspreads she made herself, linen and purple wool are her clothing. Distinctive in the councils is her husband, when he sits with the elders of the land. She makes a cloak to sell, and delivers a belt to the peddler. Strength and majesty are her raiment, she joyfully awaits the last day. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and a lesson of kindness is on her tongue. She anticipates the ways of her household, and partakes not of the bread of laziness. Her children arise and praise her, her husband, and he lauds her. Many daughters have amassed achievement, but you surpassed them all. False is grace and vain is beauty, a God-fearing woman — she should be praised. Give her the fruits of her hand and let her be praised in the gates by her very own deeds.

The sixth day. Thus the heavens and earth were finished, and all their array. On the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and he abstained on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it He abstained from all His work which God created to make.
